A quote for a complete electrical installation

A new-build home, major renovation or shop fit-out is a substantial job. An itemised quote shows customers what is included and what each part costs, while making later invoicing easier.

Why itemise a quote?

A single line saying 'Electrical installation according to plan' is quick, but does not explain why a competitor is cheaper or what happens if the customer removes two sockets. Sections for the distribution board, wiring, lighting points, sockets, outdoor lighting and inspection make your pricing clear. Changes affect only the relevant section.

Sections also help with staged invoicing after the first-fix stage, finishing and inspection. If the quote is already structured by phase, you can convert it into an invoice for each stage.

How to do it, step by step

  1. 1

    Build the quote by section

Add one or more lines per section and begin each description with its name, for example 'Lighting: recessed spotlights, 14 units'. Section headings and subtotals are unavailable, so line order provides the structure.

  2. 2

    Save unit prices as products

Create products for common items, such as socket points and lighting points. Then simply enter quantities to keep prices consistent across quotes.

  3. 3

    Choose a professional layout

Select a layout with your logo and colour in settings. Pro and Team let you add a cover page and your terms to the quote.

  4. 4

    Get approval and invoice

The customer approves the quote online with a signature. Convert it into one invoice or staged invoices, adjusting the lines to reflect completed work.

Example

Example: installation in a new-build home

An electrician quotes for a complete installation in a private customer's new-build home. The home is less than ten years old, so 21% VAT applies.

Distribution board: new board with RCD and circuit breakers, fixed price€1,450.00
Wiring: conduits and cables, fixed price€1,980.00
Lighting: lighting points, 18 units at €65.00€1,170.00
Sockets: double, 22 units at €48.00€1,056.00
Inspection and diagrams, fixed price€320.00
Total excluding VAT€5,976.00
VAT at 21%€1,254.96
Quote total€7,230.96

If the customer wants four fewer sockets, change one line to reduce the total by €192.00 excluding VAT. For renovations of older homes, check the 6% renovation VAT page for the rate that may apply. Reverse charge applies to businesses filing periodic VAT returns; see the reverse charge page.

From quote to staged invoices

Agree the invoicing stages in the quote, for example 40% after wiring, 40% after finishing and 20% after inspection. The customer approves these terms with the quote. For each stage, convert the quote into an invoice and adjust the lines. Sent invoices cannot be changed: correct mistakes with a credit note to keep your records consistent, even on projects lasting months.

If you work for a contractor rather than directly for the owner, read the subcontracting guide. For more on staged invoicing, see how contractors use progress statements.
